Benin Catholic Archbishop Akubeze Dies Before Retirement
The Catholic Church in Nigeria is mourning the death of the Archbishop of Benin City, Most Reverend Augustine Obiora Akubeze, who died on Thursday while on vacation abroad.
Church authorities said the Archbishop died peacefully in his sleep. His death came just weeks before his planned retirement. He would have celebrated his 70th birthday on August 25, the age at which Catholic bishops normally retire.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City confirmed the news in a statement signed by its Chancellor, Very Reverend Michael Oyanoafoh. The Church announced the passing of the Archbishop with deep sorrow but expressed hope in the promise of Christ’s resurrection.
Archbishop Akubeze began his priestly ministry after his ordination on October 3, 1987. Later, the Catholic Church appointed him Bishop of Uromi on December 14, 2005, and he received episcopal consecration on February 25, 2006. In 2011, he became the Archbishop of Benin City and officially assumed office on April 28 of the same year.
The Archdiocese described him as a humble servant of God who dedicated his life to faith, obedience, and service. It said he touched many lives through his simple lifestyle, kindness, and fatherly care.

The statement also prayed for God’s mercy upon his soul and asked the faithful to remember him in their prayers. Church leaders added that details of his funeral will be announced in due course.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria also paid tribute to the late Archbishop. In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Reverend Father Michael A. Banjo, the Secretariat described his death as part of God’s will.
The Secretariat praised Archbishop Akubeze for his commitment to both the spiritual and human development of the Church. It said he worked tirelessly to strengthen the Archdiocese of Benin City and remained deeply committed to the welfare and formation of priests.
Furthermore, the statement recalled his service as President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria. During his tenure, he stood firmly for biblical truth and faithful teaching. His episcopal motto, “That I May Bear Witness to the Truth,” reflected his lifelong commitment to the Gospel.
The Secretariat also remembered him as a patient listener, a generous leader, and a compassionate shepherd. It noted that his gentle character showed that true leadership in the Church comes through service rather than power.
Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze leaves behind a lasting legacy of faith, humility, and dedicated service to the Catholic Church in Nigeria. His life and ministry continue to inspire many faithful across the country.
