Bishop Oyedepo Warns Christians Against Fake Prophets
Bishop David Oyedepo has warned Christians against what he described as fake prophets who rely on questionable prophecies rather than the Word of God.
Speaking during a recent church service, Oyedepo urged believers to build their faith on Scripture. He cautioned them against depending on prophetic declarations about their lives, marriages, health or prosperity.
He said, “Whatever miracle that doesn’t work from the Word is fake,” cautioning Christians against being deceived by what he described as modern-day prophets who allegedly use prophecies to exploit people financially.
Oyedepo also criticised prophets who make claims about people’s personal lives without biblical basis. He questioned teachings that associate marital problems with the month in which a person got married. He described such claims as unfounded.
The bishop recounted an experience at a mountain prayer site. There, he encountered a prophet surrounded by people seeking prayers and prophecies. He said the experience troubled him and prompted him to confront the man.

According to Oyedepo, Christians should develop what he called “spiritual muscles” by studying and holding firmly to the Word of God. He warned that depending excessively on prophecies could leave believers vulnerable to manipulation. It could also distract them from their faith.
He further stated that he did not need anyone to prophesy a trouble-free marriage or victory over death to him. He said he found those assurances in Scripture.
“Nobody prophesied hitch-free marriage to me. I saw it in the Word,” he said.
Oyedepo urged Christians to remain spiritually alert and test prophetic claims against Scripture.
He concluded by encouraging believers to stand firmly on God’s Word. He declared that darkness cannot overcome light and prayed for an end to every form of harassment in their lives.
