Relief as Kidnapped Oyo Children Regain Freedom
The pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending 57 days in captivity, following a coordinated rescue operation by Nigerian security agencies.
The victims were rescued alive during an operation that led to the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers. Security operatives also neutralised several members of the criminal group, according to the Presidency. Officials said the operation was carried out without yielding to the kidnappers’ demand for the release of one of their detained leaders.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the rescue and said the suspects are now in the custody of the Department of State Services for further investigation. He added that security agencies would provide more details on the operation.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde described the rescue as a huge relief for the families of the victims and the people of the state. He thanked President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Services, the military, and other security agencies for their efforts in securing the victims’ freedom.
In a video released after the rescue, one of the freed victims expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the security personnel involved in the operation. The victim thanked them for their commitment and sacrifices, saying their efforts made it possible for the pupils and teachers to return home safely.
The rescue ends weeks of anxiety following the abduction, which drew widespread concern across Nigeria. The successful operation has been welcomed by residents, while security agencies continue investigations and efforts to bring other members of the kidnapping network to justice.
