Religion Must Unite, Not Divide Nigerians – Ex-Gov Fashola, SAN
Former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has called for greater religious tolerance in Nigeria, stressing that faith should bring people together rather than deepen divisions.
Fashola made the call on Sunday at the annual “God in My Life” lecture organised by the Torchbearer Society of Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral in Ikeja GRA, Lagos. PUNCH Online reported the event in a statement made available on Monday.
The former governor, who is a Muslim, said religious belief should remain a personal conviction. He urged Nigerians to respect people of different faiths and allow them to practise their beliefs freely.
According to Fashola, peaceful coexistence remains important to national unity. He said religion should serve as a force for building stronger relationships across communities.
“Religion should unite rather than divide people,” Fashola said.
He also spoke about the place of God in human life. Fashola described God as the ultimate architect of creation and said divine influence could be seen through different aspects of human existence.
The former governor mentioned family members, friends, associates, schools and workplaces as some of the avenues through which people receive guidance and direction. He said these experiences can shape an individual’s journey through life.

Fashola also reflected on his upbringing and personal faith journey. He recalled his early connection with the Anglican Church and said those experiences contributed to his development.
He further recounted several dangerous moments from his younger years. Fashola attributed his survival during those experiences to divine providence and said they made him reflect on the limits of human control.
The former governor challenged the audience to consider whether anyone could determine the exact order of events in their own life. He said the uncertainties surrounding human existence should encourage people to recognise God’s influence.
Speaking during the event, the Chief Host and Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lagos West, Rt. Revd. Olusola Odedeji, described the programme as an opportunity for reflection, testimony and gratitude.
“God in my life is a call to reflection, testimonies and appreciation,” Odedeji said. He added, “We can be lonely but not alone.”

The bishop also praised Fashola as a role model for young Nigerians. He noted that youths from across the diocese attended the programme to hear his experiences and draw lessons from his life.
Earlier, a member of the Torchbearer Society and former Chairman of Nestle Plc, Chief Olusegun Osunkeye, commended Fashola for his record in public service. He also praised his contributions to the church and Lagos State during his tenure as governor.
The annual lecture brings together Nigerians from different backgrounds to discuss faith, leadership, public service, business and personal experiences.
The event attracted clergy, professionals, community leaders and young people. Speakers at the gathering highlighted the importance of faith, tolerance and national unity.
