Sponsors Fund Terror to Blackmail Pres. Tinubu-Bishop Kawas

The President-General of the Charismatic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, has alleged that some individuals are sponsoring banditry, kidnapping and terrorism to discredit President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Kawas made the claim while defending the bishops’ recent endorsement of Tinubu for a second term during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday.

The cleric insisted that financial benefits did not influence the endorsement. He said no one had given the bishops money in exchange for supporting President Bola Tinubu.

Kawas said the bishops backed Tinubu because they believe some individuals exploit insecurity in the country to frustrate and undermine his administration.

He compared the situation with former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, claiming that similar efforts once sought to portray Jonathan negatively.

Kawas said the bishops were convinced by what he described as intelligence indicating that some people were behind acts of banditry and terrorism for political purposes.

He explained that this belief influenced the group’s decision to support Tinubu, whom they considered the candidate they should back.

The archbishop also dismissed the suggestion that financial benefits determine the bishops’ political endorsements. He said they would support a candidate they considered suitable regardless of whether any financial benefit came from the decision.

Kawas referred to the 2023 presidential election, when the bishops supported Peter Obi. He noted that Obi had publicly said he would not distribute money to Nigerians, but that did not prevent the bishops from backing him at the time.

He maintained that the bishops’ political decisions are based on their convictions rather than financial considerations.
