CAN Leader Urges Ethical Governance, Resource Management

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has called for ethical leadership and responsible management of Nigeria’s resources.

Okoh said Nigeria has abundant human and natural resources, talented citizens and innovative ideas. However, he stressed that the country needs competent and courageous leaders who can manage its resources transparently and in the interest of the people.

The CAN President spoke on Monday at the 2026 Annual National Management Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), where he was invested as an Honorary Fellow of the institute.

He said Nigeria had reached a critical stage in its development despite its large youthful population, economic potential and resilient entrepreneurial spirit.

According to Okoh, the quality of a nation’s institutions and the people responsible for managing them play a major role in determining its progress.

He urged managers and leaders to uphold integrity, accountability, excellence and responsible stewardship in their various roles.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Sixty-Five Years of Management Excellence: Strengthening Institutional Governance in Nigeria,” Okoh described it as timely and relevant to the country’s present challenges.

He also commended NIM for its 65-year contribution to management practice and professional development in Nigeria.

Okoh noted that the Church also has a responsibility to manage people, resources, organisations and programmes effectively. He pointed out that churches operate schools, hospitals, universities, humanitarian initiatives, media organisations and charitable institutions.

Drawing from the biblical principle of stewardship and the Parable of the Talents, he said resources entrusted to individuals and institutions should be used wisely and productively rather than wasted.

The CAN President therefore challenged NIM to continue promoting professional management and responsible stewardship across the country.

He described his recognition as an Honorary Fellow of the institute as more than a personal achievement. According to him, the honour represents a call to greater service and a renewed commitment to nation-building.

Okoh said he accepted the recognition on behalf of CAN and the wider Christian community. He pledged to continue promoting leadership built on integrity, service, accountability, excellence and the fear of God.

He also urged NIM to use the next phase of its 65-year journey to help build institutions that are ethical, efficient, resilient and innovative, with the capacity to deliver better services to Nigerians.

Okoh expressed appreciation to NIM President and Chairman of Council, Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (rtd), as well as the institute’s past presidents, fellows, members, management and staff.

He described the recognition as an invitation to deeper partnership and greater service to Nigeria.
