Bishop Ukpong Warns Leaders Against Abuse of Political Power

The Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Rt Rev Dr Michael Kalu Ukpong, has spoken strongly against the abuse of political office. He warned that leaders who misuse authority will one day answer for their actions before God.

His message comes at a time when many Nigerians are deeply worried about corruption, injustice, and poor leadership. In the Bible, several rulers faced criticism when they acted unjustly. Prophets openly challenged kings who oppressed people or abused authority. These stories show that God expects leaders to rule with wisdom and fairness.

Furthermore, accountability helps protect society from abuse. When leaders reject advice, silence criticism, or ignore justice, public trust begins to disappear. As trust fades, people become discouraged and frustrated.

The bishop therefore urged politicians to remember the weight of the offices they hold. According to him, leadership should improve society and protect human dignity.Religious leaders also have an important role in society. They help guide moral conversations and encourage people to stand for truth and justice.

The bishop’s statement serves as both a warning and a reminder. It warns leaders against pride and misuse of authority. At the same time, it reminds citizens that good leadership is still possible.

Moreover, Christians are encouraged to pray for those in authority while also supporting honesty and fairness within their communities. Positive change often begins when individuals choose integrity in their daily lives.

The church therefore cannot remain silent when society faces moral challenges. Speaking about justice, compassion, and accountability remains part of its responsibility.
