Governor Otti Explains Ecumenical Centre Vision for God
According to Independent News, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has explained the motivation behind the construction of an Ecumenical Centre in Umuahia, saying the project is tied to a personal vow he made to God years before becoming governor.
He made the disclosure during the foundation-laying ceremony of the 1,000-capacity worship facility located at Umuagu in Umuahia North Local Government Area.
The event was held as part of activities marking the third anniversary of his administration, which began on May 29, 2023.
Religious leaders from across the state attended the ceremony in large numbers. They were led by Bishop Chikezie Elekwa, former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Abia State.
Prayers were offered at the site for the success of the project and for the state government, as clergymen dedicated the development to what they described as a spiritual assignment.
Governor Otti said the Ecumenical Centre project is not a new idea but one that has been with him for many years. He explained that it reflects a commitment he made before assuming public office.

He noted that the land for the project was acquired as far back as 2009. According to him, the property had remained unused for years while awaiting the right moment for development.
Otti stated that the decision to finally commence construction was part of his desire to fulfil what he described as a long-standing obligation to God. He added that the vision had remained consistent over time.
The governor also stressed that the project is being executed as a private initiative. He said no funds from the Abia State government will be used for its construction, as it is fully financed from his personal resources.
He reiterated that the state’s treasury is not involved in any aspect of the development. According to him, the project stands separately from government spending and public funding structures.
The contractor handling the project, Architect Onuka Ukwa, confirmed that the facility is designed to serve Christians across different denominations in Abia State. He described it as a multi-purpose worship center with broad religious use.
Ukwa added that the project is expected to be completed within 18 months. He assured that construction work will be delivered according to specification and within the agreed timeline.
