Gaise Baba Seeks Stronger Structure for Afro Gospel

Afro gospel artist Gaise Baba has called for greater investment and stronger structures to support Christian music, particularly the growing Afro gospel movement.

Gaise made the call while discussing his song Oruko on Not Just Verses. He said musicians must understand the influence their work can have on listeners, regardless of the genre.

“Everybody’s music inspires the audience to make choices, sometimes life-impacting choices,” he said.

The singer warned artists against producing music that promotes harmful or reckless choices simply because it does not fall under the gospel category.

He also identified funding and institutional support as major challenges facing Afro gospel. According to him, many Christian artists lack the financial resources and support systems needed to sustain their careers and develop their craft.

“Gospel music, especially Afro gospel, needs institutional funding,” Gaise said.

He further challenged the belief that Christian music only has value when it fits into a church service. He argued that gospel music should be defined by its message rather than a particular sound or musical style.

“Gospel is not a genre, it’s a message,” he said.

Gaise noted that Christian artists can explore rap and other contemporary styles without compromising their faith. He urged them to focus on originality, quality and strong messaging instead of copying secular musicians.

“We’re not people chasing or trying to be like anybody. We set the pace,” he said.

The artist also pointed to Nigeria’s long history of Christian music. He argued that gospel music should be recognised as part of the country’s cultural and creative landscape rather than treated as separate from mainstream music.

Gaise’s comments highlight the need for stronger financial backing, professional structures and greater creative investment in Afro gospel. He believes these elements can help Christian music reach wider audiences while retaining its message and identity.
