Anglican Bishop Stephen Fagbemi Demands Solutions to Economy, Insecurity
The Bishop of Owo Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Stephen Fagbemi, has urged governments at all levels to take urgent steps to improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
The cleric raised concerns over the country’s deepening economic crisis, growing insecurity and falling standard of living. According to the bishop, the situation requires immediate and decisive action.
Fagbemi made the appeal on Sunday during the Second Session of the 15th Synod of the Diocese of Owo at St. Paul’s Church, Imoru, in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The bishop said many Nigerians continue to struggle with the rising cost of living despite ongoing economic reforms and increased taxation. The bishop said rising prices have pushed essential goods beyond the reach of many Nigerian families.
Fagbemi also lamented the rising cost of medical care, saying access to quality healthcare has become difficult for many families.
According to the bishop, the high cost of hospital treatment now forces many people to rely on traditional herbs and other alternative remedies, a trend described as dangerous

The cleric also expressed concern over the country’s worsening security situation. The bishop said the growing threat of kidnapping and violent attacks has made road travel unsafe in many parts of Nigeria.
Fagbemi cited the recent abduction and release of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State as another reminder of the urgent need to strengthen security and prevent similar incidents.
The bishop also decried the increasing cases of kidnappings involving traditional rulers, security personnel and other innocent Nigerians. According to the cleric, the situation demands emergency action from the Federal Government.
Fagbemi urged the government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity and adopt more effective strategies to combat crime. The bishop also called for broader collaboration with security experts, local vigilante groups, hunters and international partners. The cleric further recommended the use of drones and helicopters to improve surveillance and security operations nationwide.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Fagbemi advised Nigerians against making political choices out of frustration. The bishop urged citizens to pray for President Bola Tinubu’s administration to overcome the country’s economic and governance challenges.
