Faith & Resilience: Ebonyi Believers After Windstorm
ABAKALIKI Residents of Okpuitumo community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State are struggling to recover after a powerful windstorm swept through the area. The early morning storm destroyed homes, farms, and businesses, leaving many people in distress.
The storm struck around 3 am near Gmelina Junction. It tore off roofs, pulled down structures, and ruined property worth hundreds of millions of naira. Although no lives were lost, many families lost their means of survival.
One of the worst hit was the Assemblies of God Church in the community. The building collapsed during the storm, leaving members without a place of worship.
The church pastor, Rev Moses Odorimo, described the incident as shocking. He said he heard a loud noise and rushed out, only to find the building in ruins. He appealed to the Ebonyi State Government and kind hearted individuals for support to rebuild the church.

For many residents, the loss is personal and painful. Mrs Nwadurunne Uguru, a widow, said the storm damaged her home and destroyed food items and valuables.
Similarly, Mr Goddy Nwogha said the storm destroyed his yam barn worth millions of naira after a tree fell on it. He explained that the incident has left him facing serious financial hardship.
In another case, Miss Chioma Nweke lost over one thousand birds after her poultry structure collapsed. She said she took a loan to start the business and now has no means to repay it. She appealed for assistance to rebuild her livelihood.
A shop owner, Onyekachi Eze, also shared his loss. He said rain soaked goods worth millions after the roof of his shop was damaged. He explained that the shop is his only source of income and supports his family and siblings.
However, they continue to call on the state government, aid groups, and well meaning Nigerians to support them as they try to rebuild their lives.
