Pastor Offers Incentives to Find Husband for Autistic Daughter

A recent move by  Pastor Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, founder of Omega Power Ministries, has set off a wave of public reaction across Nigeria. The pastor reportedly offered money and other incentives to any man willing to marry his adopted daughter who lives with autism. The story quickly spread across social media, drawing support, criticism, and questions about compassion, dignity, and consent. It also raised important moral and spiritual reflections about how Christians should care for vulnerable adults.

Concerns began after reports revealed that Pastor Chinyere made a public appeal seeking a husband for his adult daughter. In the message, he offered financial help and other rewards to anyone willing to marry her. His intention, according to close sources, was to secure her future and ensure she had companionship and long-term care.

Autism is a developmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction. Many adults with autism live meaningful lives, hold jobs, and form healthy relationships. Yet they often need understanding, structure, and patient care. When caregivers or parents make decisions for them, those choices must respect their dignity and personal voice. Christian teachings emphasize protecting the weak and honoring every person’s value as God’s creation. The issue therefore extends beyond one family and raises questions for society and the church about how compassion can exist without violating dignity.

Reports suggest that Pastor Chinyere expressed his deep concern about his daughter’s future, especially her need for love, care, and companionship. He publicly sought a responsible man ready to marry her and promised financial assistance to support the union. To some, this act looked like a father’s love expressed through concern. Many parents of people with special needs worry about who will care for their children when they are gone. Their fears are understandable, especially in countries where government or community support for people with disabilities is weak.

However, not everyone agreed with his method. Critics argued that presenting marriage offers in terms of monetary reward could turn a sacred union into a transaction. Marriage, they insisted, should be based on love, choice, and respect, not financial promises. Advocates for people with disabilities pointed out that adults with autism must have the right to make their own decisions. They reminded the public that compassion should never override consent. Every human being deserves privacy, autonomy, and the right to choose their future partner freely.

This unfolding story soon became a talking point nationwide, sparking discussions about ethics, family duty, and the church’s moral role in protecting vulnerable people. Reactions to the pastor’s announcement were divided. Supporters praised his devotion to ensuring his daughter’s well-being and saw his actions as a form of protection and fatherly love. Others, including disability advocates, worried that the proposal might reduce a woman’s life and potential to a problem in need of a buyer. They warned that offering rewards for marriage could lead to exploitation and emotional harm.

Christian counselors also joined the debate. They stressed that the real test of love lies in patience and protection rather than public display or quick fixes. They encouraged believers to see people with disabilities not as a burden but as individuals capable of purpose and growth when given proper care and inclusion. Across social media platforms, voices from diverse faith and social backgrounds urged empathy, wisdom, and prayerful reflection. While many did not doubt the pastor’s intentions, most agreed that actions toward vulnerable individuals must uphold respect and consent.

This story goes beyond controversy and draws attention to the bigger issue faced by families of people with special needs: the fear of who will care for them in the future. Jesus showed compassion to those society often overlooked. He met them with love and restored their sense of worth. That same example should guide Christians today. Love must be accompanied by wisdom. Compassion that ignores personal choice can cause harm instead of healing.

For churches, there is an opportunity to lead by providing safe spaces, emotional care, and spiritual and vocational support for people with disabilities. Faith communities can be a refuge where everyone feels seen, valued, and respected. When the church embraces people as equals rather than victims, it builds a stronger and more caring society.

The heart of this story is not judgment but reflection. It reminds every Christian family of the need to handle vulnerable people with care, empathy, and responsibility. True compassion is not about offering wealth or status but about listening and providing the support a person truly needs. Marriage must remain a choice built on love and trust rather than a solution to care giving challenges. Every believer is called to reflect the humility and love of Christ. That includes respecting the autonomy of people living with disabilities and helping them live fully with dignity.
