Bishop Dr Paulinus Ezeokafo Calls for Igbo Unity Ahead of 2027 Vote
Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Dr. Paulinus Ezeokafor, has called on Ndigbo to unite and position themselves for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race, insisting that it is their turn to lead the country.
He made the statement on Sunday during the 100th anniversary celebration of St Matthew’s Catholic Church in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The event also featured the confirmation of 203 candidates.
In his homily, the bishop described the 2027 general election as a collective project for Ndigbo. He urged the people of the Southeast to support one another politically and present a united front in the quest for national leadership.
Ezeokafor also used the occasion to express concern over the state of the nation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He said many Nigerians are facing hardship and rising economic pressure, adding that the situation calls for urgent improvement in governance.

He, however, commended Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for what he described as visible progress in security and infrastructure development across the state. He listed improvements in roads, healthcare facilities, solar-powered projects and water systems as notable achievements.
The cleric encouraged political actors to avoid violence and intimidation ahead of future elections. He also urged respect for zoning arrangements and peaceful participation in the democratic process.
Beyond politics, Ezeokafor warned against moral decline and what he described as rising neo-pagan practices. He expressed concern that some young people from Christian homes are becoming involved in harmful traditional rituals that contradict Christian teachings.
He called on parents to take greater responsibility in raising their children. According to him, early moral and spiritual guidance remains essential in preventing social and religious decay.
