Marriage Should Be Built on Covenant, Not Deal-Pastor Iren

Pastor Emmanuel Iren has advised Christians to view marriage as a covenant rather than a relationship based primarily on financial benefits, physical attraction or personal gain.

Iren shared the counsel while recalling an experience from his MBA programme. He said a woman once told him that she would leave her husband if he could no longer provide financially.

According to the pastor, the comment reflected a wider mindset in which some relationships are approached as exchanges based on what each person can offer. He described the attitude as, “I’m pretty, you have money, we have a deal.”

Iren said this approach differs from the biblical understanding of marriage, which he described as a covenant between two people. “Marriage is not a contract, it is a covenant,” he said.

He explained that although marriage comes with responsibilities for both partners, it should not be reduced to a simple arrangement where each person remains committed only while the expected benefits continue.

Iren challenged singles to look beyond a potential spouse’s appearance, financial position or present circumstances when making marriage decisions.

He urged them to consider whether the person is someone they can trust during difficult seasons. “Who can I entrust myself with on my worst days?” he asked.

The pastor further suggested that people should examine who they would naturally turn to when facing serious challenges. He said this could help them assess whether a potential partner is truly suited for marriage.

Iren stressed that a Kingdom-centred marriage should be founded on trust, commitment and shared purpose rather than possessions, appearance or personal advantage.
