Oyo CAN Directs Churches to Fence Premises, Limit Late Events
According to The Punch, the Oyo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged churches across the state to strengthen security measures in response to the growing threat of kidnapping and abduction.
The directive formed part of a communiqué issued on Wednesday and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan. The document carried the signatures of the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, and the Secretary, Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi.
The association said recent security developments demand greater vigilance from church leaders and worshippers. It urged churches to improve security around their premises and deploy both personnel and technology to enhance protection.
CAN also called on congregations to intensify prayers for victims currently in captivity. It further advised churches to suspend late-night physical activities until the security situation improves.
The body stressed the need for churches to prioritise fencing and gating their premises. It said such measures would help strengthen access control and improve safety for worshippers.
The association urged church leaders to engage trained security personnel, especially during services and major gatherings. It said every church should review the effectiveness and credibility of guards and other workers responsible for essential duties.

The association also reminded the public to comply with the executive order issued by Governor Seyi Makinde restricting commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m. across the state.
CAN expressed concern over the rising cases of insecurity in Oyo State. It also sympathized with families whose loved ones remain in the custody of kidnappers.
At the same time, the association commended efforts by both the state and federal governments to secure the freedom of abducted persons. It specifically acknowledged interventions linked to the recent incident in Orire Local Government Area.
