Plateau Governor Urges Church Action on Youth Drug Abuse

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has called on churches in the state to intensify internal evangelism as part of efforts to address rising youth drug abuse, moral decline, and insecurity. He made the call on Sunday in Jos while speaking at the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) Headquarters, where he attended a church service as a guest.

According to PEOPLE GAZETTENG, the governor said the state is currently dealing with serious security challenges, but stressed that there is also a growing internal social problem that must not be ignored.

According to him, there is a widening gap between the church and young people, warning that many youths are no longer responsive to spiritual teachings or guidance from church leaders. Mutfwang referenced recent violent incidents in Mangu, where young miners were attacked and killed, saying the situation exposed deeper issues affecting the youth population in the state.

He explained that reports from the incident showed that some of the young people involved were either under the influence of drugs or mentally confused during the crisis, while others were also linked to the display of charms, which he described as troubling.

He said, “We are losing a very serious battle. There is a serious disconnect between the young people and the church.” He added that the situation reflects a deeper moral and spiritual crisis, stressing that the church must urgently re-engage and re-evangelize young people.

The governor warned that drug addiction, child trafficking, and other social vices are becoming more common and are contributing to insecurity across communities in Plateau State. He urged churches, parents, and community leaders to take responsibility in addressing what he described as battles of ignorance, poverty, and substance abuse affecting the youth.

Mutfwang also noted that while government continues to respond to external security threats, internal moral decay must also be addressed if lasting peace is to be achieved.

He called on the church to strengthen fellowship systems and increase evangelism efforts, saying the responsibility of guiding young people spiritually cannot be ignored. Earlier in his message, ECWA President, Rev. Job Bagat, said Plateau State holds a strategic position in Nigeria’s Christian community and requires strong spiritual leadership.

He urged churches to remain committed to evangelism and the training of pastors to ensure sound growth of the church and stronger moral influence in society. Bagat also encouraged Christians to remain steadfast, stressing that the church must continue to play an active role in shaping society and addressing moral challenges among young people.
