Archbishop Aladekugbe Urges Security Over Elections

According to The Punch NG, The Archbishop of Ibadan Province and Bishop of Ibadan North Anglican Diocese, Most Rev. Williams Aladekugbe, has urged political leaders in Nigeria to prioritize national security over election-related ambitions, warning that continued neglect could worsen the country’s insecurity crisis.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Monday, Aladekugbe said the rising wave of violence across the country demands urgent and sustained attention from those in authority.

He expressed concern that terrorism, banditry and kidnapping have reached alarming levels, stressing that many Nigerians are now living in fear and uncertainty.

According to him, the current situation reflects a deep national crisis that has weakened public confidence and eroded the value placed on human life.

The cleric criticized what he described as the political class’s growing obsession with elections, arguing that it has overshadowed the urgent need to protect citizens and restore stability in affected communities.

He questioned the priorities of leaders, warning that governance would become meaningless if citizens continue to lose their lives to violent attacks. He also suggested that the scale of insecurity may require broader international support if local efforts prove insufficient.

Aladekugbe lamented the social and economic impact of the crisis, noting that many families have been displaced as loved ones relocate abroad for safety. He said this trend is weakening national unity, discouraging investment and contributing to a growing brain drain.

He further expressed concern over the safety of security personnel, saying soldiers and police officers are increasingly being killed in the line of duty due to weaknesses and alleged compromises within the system.

Despite the bleak situation, the archbishop encouraged Nigerians, particularly Christians, to remain hopeful and maintain a spirit of gratitude. He also prayed for a shift in the mindset of political leaders, asking for divine guidance to help them refocus on the welfare of the nation.
