Calls Grow to Add Religious Education to UK Curriculum

Religious Education (RE) could soon become a formal part of the National Curriculum for the first time, following a government review calling for sweeping reforms to strengthen the subject across schools in England.

The Curriculum and Assessment Review described Religious Education as vital to fostering understanding, respect, and moral awareness in modern Britain. It recommended that RE be added to the National Curriculum  a move many education leaders have hailed as historic.

The Religious Education Policy Unit welcomed the proposal, calling it a “long-overdue opportunity” to improve quality and consistency nationwide. At present, local authorities set their own RE syllabuses, resulting in significant variation from one region to another.

Deborah Weston OBE, chair of the Religious Education Policy Unit, said the review represents “the most important opportunity for the subject in decades,” noting that it could finally end years of decline and underinvestment.

Sarah Lane Cawte, chair of the Religious Education Council, described the recommendation as a potential turning point.
“This change could usher in a new era for RE,” she said. “We are ready to work with government, school leaders, and faith communities to ensure that teachers, academics, and religious voices shape this new direction. Together, we can deliver a subject that is rigorous, relevant, and inspiring for every young person.”

If approved, it will mark the first time in history that Religious Education is formally included in England’s National Curriculum  a milestone many believe could redefine how future generations understand faith, culture, and shared values in a diverse society.
