Pastor Rick Warren Calls for Revival of Early Church Love

Pastor and author Rick Warren has urged Christians worldwide to rediscover the passion and love that defined the first-century church. He said this revival of genuine love and prayer is key to completing the Great Commission by 2033, marking two thousand years since the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Speaking at the World Evangelical Alliance General Assembly in Seoul, South Korea, Warren said the modern church must return to the simplicity of the gospel message. He stressed that biblical truth is timeless and works across all cultures.

“I’m not interested in American or European methods,” Warren said. “If a principle is truly from the Bible, it will work anywhere. God’s Word is our best model.”

He explained that early Christians were known for their deep love, constant prayer, and bold witness. According to him, love was the force that drew people to Christ, and it remains the world’s deepest need today.

“Love is the magnet that brought people to Jesus,” he said. “If a church truly loves people, you won’t have enough space to contain them. The world is starving for love, not for the things we often try to offer.”

Warren said many pastors love large crowds but struggle to genuinely love individuals. “I’ve met many leaders who love the spotlight but not the people they serve,” he added.

He also warned that knowledge alone is not enough. Christians must practice what they know from the Bible. “We don’t get blessed by knowing the Word of God but by doing it,” he said. “The problem with many believers today is that we know more than we live out.”

Warren pointed to the explosive growth of the early church as an example to follow. He said the church grew because it followed Jesus’ pattern, preaching, teaching, helping the needy, and planting new congregations.

“The early believers started with only 120 people praying in an upper room,” he said. “By the year 360, half of the Roman Empire had become Christian. Even the emperor turned to Christ. They grew because they followed the way Jesus trained His disciples.”

Warren concluded by calling on the church to return to its roots of love and service. He said the world will only be reached when believers live out their faith with the same passion that marked the early followers of Christ
