How We Smuggled Bibles into China — Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai

In 1985, we set out on a mission that tested both our faith and courage to take Bibles into China. We had just left Hong Kong and arrived at the Kengtung border, one of the gateways into mainland China.

As soon as we got there, the officers spoke to us in a stern tone: “We don’t want to tempt you. We don’t want you to sin. If you have your suitcases, place them on our machines. The machines will detect if you are carrying Bibles. Anyone caught will serve twenty years in jail.”

At that moment, my heart raced. Thousands of thoughts ran through my mind. I whispered to myself, “Twenty years without tasting garri? Lord, please help me.”

Then, I heard the Holy Spirit remind me: “You can speak in tongues.”
So, I began to pray in tongues quietly. My African companion, more daring than I was, joined me. He turned to me and said, “Uma, if they detain us, we’ll turn the prison into a church!”

He was confident. “The American embassy will come for us,” he said.
I replied, half-joking, “Our own embassy will run away. They won’t come.”

As we continued praying in tongues, something remarkable happened. All five machines suddenly broke down. The officers were confused. They waved us through without checking a single bag.

That day, we walked into China with Bibles, fearful yet fearless, trembling yet trusting. God showed that when faith speaks, even machines obey.
