United States Reduces Visa Validity for Nigerian Nationals to Three Months

The United States Department of State has announced a significant revision to its non-immigrant visa policy for Nigerian citizens. Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerians will now be valid for three months and limited to a single entry.

This update was disclosed in a statement released by the US Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday, July 9, 2025. According to the embassy, visas issued prior to July 8, 2025, will remain valid as originally granted.

The US government explained that the adjustment is part of its global visa reciprocity process, a routine review aimed at ensuring that US visa policies are aligned with international standards and practices.

“The US visa criteria and standards are designed to protect the integrity of US immigration systems,” the embassy stated. “These standards are based on global technical and security benchmarks.”

Key benchmarks influencing the decision include:

Secure issuance of travel documents with verified identities.
Effective visa overstay management practices.
Robust information sharing on public safety and criminal records.

The US Mission affirmed that it is working closely with Nigerian authorities to support improvements in meeting these benchmarks. The embassy acknowledged ongoing reforms by Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies and commended efforts toward achieving international best practices.

Despite the more restrictive visa policy, the United States emphasized its continued commitment to a strong bilateral relationship with Nigeria.

“The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity,” the statement said.

It also reaffirmed US support for people-to-people ties, particularly through educational, business, and cultural exchanges.

Nigerian nationals planning to apply for US visas are encouraged to:

Carefully adhere to the terms of their visas.
Ensure all travel documents are authentic, complete, and up to date.
Remain informed about visa requirements, which are subject to change as policies evolve.

The US Embassy concluded by reiterating its intent to maintain open and constructive engagement with the Nigerian government and citizens alike.
