Lagos State Shuts Down Olusosun, And Solous Dumpsites

The Lagos State Government has announced the closure of two major dumpsites: Olusosun in Ojota and Solous III in Igando. This move aims to address the increasing environmental and public health concerns associated with these sites.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this initiative following an investigative report by PUNCH Healthwise, which exposed hazardous conditions at these sites. The report highlighted that scavengers operate without protective gear, directly handling waste and posing significant health risks to nearby communities.

In response to these concerns, the state has formed a partnership with ZoomLion Nigeria, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, to reform waste management practices. This collaboration is expected to create over 5,000 jobs and enhance environmental standards across Lagos.

As part of the new strategy, a transfer loading station will be set up at the Olusosun site, enabling its complete closure. Approximately 2,500 tonnes of daily waste will be redirected to a new Material Recovery Facility in Ikorodu. Similarly, Solous III will be decommissioned, with 1,500 tonnes of waste transferred to a planned facility in Badagry.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised that these measures align with the administration’s vision of transforming Lagos into a cleaner, healthier city that meets global urban sanitation standards.

Despite a 2018 ban on cart pushers and wheelbarrow operators, informal waste collection persists, with unregulated scavengers continuing to operate across the city. The government’s latest initiative aims to curb these practices and promote a more sustainable waste management system.

This significant policy shift represents a proactive approach to mitigating health hazards and improving the overall quality of life for Lagos residents.
