God Will Send Nigeria a Messiah in 2027-Bishop Benson Abrifor

The Presiding Bishop of Gospel Church of Christ Worldwide, Bishop Benson Abrifor, has urged Nigerians to use the 2027 elections to seek a new direction for the country. Abrifor said Nigeria needs a leader capable of addressing its economic and security challenges.

The cleric spoke during the church’s 2026 national convention at its headquarters in Awodi Ora Estate, Apapa, Lagos. He said the current situation in the country falls short of the expectations Nigerians had when they voted in the 2023 elections.

According to him, Nigeria needs a change in both leadership and citizens’ attitudes to achieve meaningful progress. “What we are experiencing presently is not what we bargained for in 2023,” Abrifor said.

He called for a positive shift in the way leaders and citizens approach the country’s challenges. Abrifor expressed hope that Nigeria would overcome its difficulties through divine intervention and better leadership.

“Despite the challenges confronting us, I strongly believe that one day, God will send the Messiah to us — a leader that will transform the entire system for the better,” he said.

The bishop urged eligible Nigerians to participate in the 2027 elections and support candidates who can provide effective leadership. He also called on the Federal Government to improve the security and welfare of citizens.

Abrifor condemned the killings recorded in some communities and the economic hardship facing Nigerians.

The cleric also opposed proposed legislation seeking to restrict open-air preaching, including evangelism on buses and other public spaces. He urged the government to protect religious freedom and avoid favouring one faith over another.

“Government must not persecute any religious body or show preference for one and destroy others,” he said. The convention was held under the theme, “A New Page.” Abrifor described the theme as a call for a fresh start and renewed commitment to the church’s mission.

He said the convention would help members embrace a new phase of spiritual growth and service. The church also introduced new evangelism programmes during the convention.

They include the daily devotional prayer guide, Voice From Above, a free transport evangelism initiative and online daily devotional programmes.

The General Secretary of GCC Worldwide, Rev. Philip Omofezi, described the convention theme as a call to renewal and restoration. He said it represented a new season of spiritual growth and greater commitment to the church’s mission.

The convention also marked the 58th anniversary of Gospel Church of Christ Worldwide. The church said the anniversary reflects nearly six decades of ministry, growth and service across different countries.

Bishop Monday Ojomah also retired officially from the mission after more than 25 years of service. The church ordained 13 new ministers into the pastoral office. It also appointed three women as evangelists.

Eight candidates were elevated to the rank of elders, while 10 others became deacons and deaconesses. At the close of the convention, Abrifor urged participants to leave their comfort zones and embrace the next stage of their spiritual journey. He encouraged them to maintain hope despite the challenges facing the country.

“There is hope so far as there is still life,” he said.
