Chef Hilda Bassey has been dethroned as announced by Guinness World Records as Alan Fisher from Ireland breaks the former record with a new record of incredible 119 hours and 57 minutes at his restaurant in Japan.

Guinness World Records revealed its feat on the X account on Tuesday, 7th November 2023. Hilda had broken the previous record of 87 hours 45 minutes which was set by Lata Tondon (India) in 2019.

Chef Hilda Bassey celebrates her Irish colleague who is now the world record holder for the longest cooking marathon.

The Irish chef, Alan Fisher who is a restaurant owner and a chef in Japan has beaten the previous record by extending it with 24 hours more than the previous record held by Nigeria’s chef Hilda Bassey.

Alan baked and cooked for 9 days and made 357kg worth of Soda Bread and 590kg worth of dishes (3,360 portions consisting of 32 recipes) during those times.

Not content with one record, Fisher went on to conquer the longest baking marathon (individual) with a time of 47 hours and 21 minutes, beating the previous record held by Wendy Sandner from the USA

In August 2014, Fisher took a leap of faith and opened his own restaurant in Japan. He chose to focus on Irish food and culture as the cornerstone of his culinary venture, drawing inspiration from his Irish heritage.

Alan Fisher learned about the longest cooking marathon record in March while he was participating in the ‘I Love Ireand’ Festival in Tokyo.

The 26-year-old Nigerian chef began on Thursday, May 11, and continued through Monday, May 15, cooking over 100 pots of food during her four-day kitchen stint.

GWR said that Hilda attempted to set a record of 100 hours, however, almost seven hours were deducted from her final total because she mistakenly took extra minutes for one of her rest breaks earlier on in the attempt.

There are mixed reactions about this new record and one of the comments and response of the Official Twitter handle of the Guinness World Records might spur some disinterest by some Nigerians and Africans. Check the comments below
