CAN Hails President Tinubu, Security Agencies Over Oriire Rescue

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the nation’s security agencies for rescuing pupils, teachers and other victims abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after 56 days in captivity.

The association said the victims will need continued support to recover from their traumatic experience.
It urged governments, faith-based organisations and humanitarian groups to provide counselling, medical care and emotional support. According to CAN, such assistance will help the rescued children and teachers rebuild their lives.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described reports about the rescue operation as encouraging.

He said security operatives carried out the mission with patience, credible intelligence and a strong commitment to protecting innocent lives. Archbishop Okoh noted that the successful operation shows what security agencies can achieve when they work together with professionalism and determination.

He also commended the National Security Adviser, the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Amotekun Corps, local hunters, vigilantes and everyone who contributed to the rescue.

The CAN president also praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for standing with the affected families throughout the ordeal. He welcomed the governor’s commitment to supporting the rehabilitation of the rescued pupils and teachers.
While celebrating the rescue, Okoh said many families across Nigeria are still waiting for loved ones held by terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups.

He noted that families in Oriire can now rejoice. However, many parents in states such as Borno and Niger continue to live with uncertainty. Archbishop Okoh urged Nigerians not to forget those who remain in captivity. He stressed that every child is precious and every human life deserves equal dignity, regardless of location, ethnicity or religion.

He added that the rescue should strengthen the country’s resolve to free every Nigerian still in captivity and also called for renewed efforts to make schools safe again. He said no parent should have to choose between giving a child an education and keeping that child safe.

The cleric thanked God for preserving the lives of the rescued victims, joined the people of Oyo State and other Nigerians in celebrating their safe return after weeks of captivity and urged Nigerians to continue praying for those still in captivity.

He also encouraged citizens to support security personnel and stand with families awaiting the return of their loved ones, said the nation would celebrate fully only when every captive regains freedom and Nigerians can live and travel without fear.
