President Tinubu Praises Catholic Church, Calls on Clerics to Promote National Unity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Catholic Church for its long-standing contributions to Nigeria’s development. He urged religious leaders to work with his administration in fostering unity, strengthening values, and building an economy that works for all citizens.

The President made this appeal at the opening of the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Tinubu stressed that faith-based institutions are crucial in bridging divides and nurturing moral responsibility in society.

According to a statement by Yomi Odunuga, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the SGF, Tinubu highlighted the Catholic Church’s role as a credible partner in national renewal. He acknowledged its investments in education, healthcare, and social welfare, especially in rural and underserved communities.

“You have stood with the people in times of hardship. You have provided comfort in grief and raised your voice against injustice and corruption,” the President said. He urged clerics across denominations to continue promoting peace and harmony.

Tinubu explained that while government reforms are underway in the economy, security, and social welfare, sustainable progress requires collaboration with religious and community leaders. He stressed that moral guidance from the pulpit is as vital as policy decisions from the State House.

The Catholic Church, one of the largest providers of private schools and hospitals in Nigeria, has historically filled gaps left by government institutions. Analysts note that its presence in rural areas has given millions access to basic education and healthcare. Tinubu’s recognition of this effort underscores the importance of faith-based organizations in the country’s socio-economic growth.

The President’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria faces economic challenges, rising inflation, and insecurity. By calling on faith leaders, Tinubu is signaling that national renewal will not be achieved by government action alone but through collective responsibility.

As the plenary continues, expectations remain high that the Catholic Bishops’ Conference will reinforce its commitment to social justice, peacebuilding, and dialogue across religious lines. For Tinubu, such collaboration could prove critical in shaping a more united and prosperous Nigeria.
