Somali Mother Forced from Home After Embracing Christianity
JAMAAME, Somalia A Somali mother of three is on the run with her children after being disowned by her family and divorced by her husband for converting to Christianity.
The 31-year-old woman, whose identity remains undisclosed for security reasons, said her ordeal began in January when she embraced the Christian faith after watching the Jesus Film during a Christmas Eve outreach.
“I do not regret embracing Christianity,” she told Morning Star News. “I have great peace in my heart. Jesus has been providing for me and the children for the last three months.”
Her conversion took place while her husband was away on business. Moved by the film, she later shared it with her mother during Ramadan. This prompted more questions, leading her to invite her father to watch it as well. But the moment she referred to Jesus as the Son of God, everything changed.
Her father grew furious and declared she was no longer welcome in his home. He informed her husband, who sided with the family and demanded she leave.
“My father told me I had to choose return to Islam or leave,” she said. “Even my mother was chased away for trying to defend me. A month later, she renounced Christianity and returned.”

The woman received a divorce notice from her husband in June, who issued the Islamic phrase “I divorce you” after confirming she had not renounced her new faith.
Since then, she has been threatened by relatives and members of the local Muslim community. “They told me it’s better they kill me than allow me to remain a Christian,” she said.
Fleeing with her children on June 13, she sought safety near the Kenyan border. They have been moving from village to village in search of food and work.
She now pleads for financial help to rent shelter, support her children’s education, and start a small business. Despite her hardships, she remains hopeful.
“My prayer is that Jesus who changed my life may touch my family too,” she said. “Please, I need the prayers of fellow believers. If I can reach Kenya, I believe God will provide.”
Somalia enforces strict Islamic law, which criminalizes conversion from Islam. According to the U.S. State Department, Islam is the state religion, and religious freedom is severely restricted. Converts to Christianity often face threats, violence, or death. Open Doors ranks Somalia as the second most dangerous country in the world for Christians.
