Two Habits That Drew Me Closer to God – Pastor Adeboye

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, has shared the two habits that shaped his spiritual journey and brought him closer to God.

When Pastor Adeboye got born again, he was already a university lecturer. He thought he knew a lot. He had spent years learning, teaching, and mastering his field. But the moment he attended Sunday school at church, he realized that spiritual knowledge was a different kind of learning.

During class, questions were asked from the Bible. Pastor Adeboye observed men and women, including market women who by his standards were illiterate, answering with confidence. They quoted scriptures from books like Galatians and Colossians, books he had barely heard of. At that time, he knew only Genesis because it was the beginning, Psalms, and Revelation at the end.

Seeing their knowledge stirred something in him. If ordinary people could understand the Bible so deeply without formal education, why could he not do the same? Pastor Adeboye made a personal decision. He would study the scriptures diligently. He wanted to reach their level of understanding and if possible surpass it.

He began reading the Bible with dedication. Every verse mattered. He reflected on the stories, teachings, and principles and sought to apply them in his daily life. Pastor Adeboye learned that spiritual growth required humility, consistency, and a heart open to God.

Prayer, he realized, was another area where he needed transformation. Before being born again, all he knew was the Lord’s Prayer. But at church, prayer was intense. People prayed for hours, sometimes from morning until evening service. They knelt, cried, and spoke to God as if He were present before them. Observing this inspired him. He wanted to know how to pray with that level of devotion and sincerity.

These two habits, studying the Bible and learning to pray, became the foundation of Pastor Adeboye’s spiritual life. They shaped his faith, character, and relationship with God. Knowledge without prayer, he discovered, was incomplete. Prayer gave life to the scriptures, and studying the Word gave wisdom to his prayers. Together, they created a powerful bond with God.

Looking back, Pastor Adeboye says that ordinary people became extraordinary teachers. The market women and men he once judged by education became his greatest spiritual mentors. They taught him that true wisdom is measured not by degrees or worldly knowledge but by dedication, faith, and a sincere desire to know God.

These habits also instilled humility. He learned that no matter how much one knows academically, there is always more to learn from God’s Word. Spiritual maturity is a lifelong journey that requires patience, discipline, and daily commitment.

Pastor Adeboye’s message is clear. Anyone seeking a deeper relationship with God can benefit from these habits. Age, background, or education level does not matter. What matters is a heart willing to study the Bible and pray with sincerity. Combining these habits transforms lives, nurtures faith, and brings true closeness to God.

For Pastor Adeboye, the Bible is more than a book. It is a roadmap for life. Prayer is more than words. It is a lifeline to God. He encourages believers to commit to these habits consistently, not as routines, but as a lifestyle.

The journey may not be easy, he says, but it is worth every effort. Those who dedicate themselves to studying the Word and praying will experience growth, peace, and a closer relationship with God.
