Tinubu Approves Employment Of 774 National Health Fellows

In a move to enhance Nigeria’s healthcare system, President Bola Tinubu has approved the employment of 774 National Health Fellows. This initiative, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Health, aims to drive sustainable improvements in the country’s medical sector while fostering youth empowerment.

Announcing the programme at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to national development and the empowerment of young Nigerians. The initiative, which attracted over 360,000 applicants, ultimately selected one fellow from each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas through a rigorous and merit-based process.

The event, which was attended by key government officials, development partners, and traditional leaders—including the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III—witnessed widespread applause as the President gave his final approval for the fellows’ employment.

Describing the programme as a “transformative initiative,” Tinubu emphasised the crucial role of Nigeria’s youth in shaping the country’s future.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to harnessing the potential of young Nigerians,” the President stated. “With over 60% of our population under the age of 30, we are a nation rich in talent, energy, and innovation. These fellows will not only contribute to healthcare improvement but also drive economic growth and social progress.”

He encouraged the selected fellows to approach their roles with a sense of purpose, reminding them that their selection was not just about employment but about becoming the future leaders of Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“This is more than just a recruitment process—it’s a statement that every Nigerian, regardless of background, deserves equal opportunities,” he added. “You are the country’s greatest asset, and we are investing in a future where Nigeria’s healthcare system can compete globally.”

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, described the initiative as a groundbreaking step toward revolutionising Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

“The journey to improving healthcare in Nigeria has begun, and we are already seeing encouraging results,” Pate remarked. He further noted that the inclusion of young professionals in the health sector would contribute significantly to innovation and the overall strengthening of medical services across the country.

Tinubu echoed this sentiment, stressing that a nation’s prosperity is directly linked to the well-being of its citizens.

“A thriving country requires a strong and efficient healthcare system,” he said. “Without a healthy population, sustainable development is impossible. These young professionals will be the foundation of this vision, and I am honoured to witness the beginning of their journey.”

The event also featured speeches from Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and Youth Minister, Ayodele Olawande, both of whom expressed their excitement about the programme’s potential impact. The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, also delivered an inspiring address, encouraging the fellows to embrace their new roles with passion and dedication.

As Nigeria continues to navigate challenges in the healthcare sector, the approval of the National Health Fellows programme signals a renewed commitment to strengthening medical services, fostering youth participation, and ensuring a healthier future for all citizens.
