Pope Francis Thanks Supporters From Hospital As He Recovers
Pope Francis has expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he has received while recovering from pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. In an audio message broadcast in St Peter’s Square, the 88-year-old pontiff, speaking in Spanish with noticeable breathlessness, reassured the faithful of his spiritual presence.
“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers for my health from the square. I accompany you from here,” he said, his voice fading at times. “May God bless you and the Virgin protect you. Thank you.”
This marked the first time Pope Francis’s voice was heard publicly since his hospitalisation on February 14. Despite initial concerns over his condition, Vatican officials have reported stable bloodwork and no further respiratory failures. While he continues breathing exercises and physiotherapy, he has also been able to carry out some work.
The Vatican has been issuing regular health bulletins detailing his progress. On Thursday, officials stated that, given the stability of his condition, the next update would be released on Saturday. However, doctors remain cautious, refraining from making any predictions about his full recovery.
Due to respiratory difficulties, the pope has been using oxygen support, wearing a mask at night and switching to a nasal cannula for high-flow oxygen during the day. His current condition prevented him from attending the Ash Wednesday celebrations, but he participated in a private blessing from his hospital suite.
Pope Francis’s hospitalisation has led to his longest period away from public duties since the start of his papacy. Unlike previous hospital stays, where he appeared on the Gemelli Hospital’s balcony for the Sunday Angelus prayer, he has missed the past three appearances, and there is no confirmation yet on whether he will be able to do so this weekend.

In his absence, senior Cardinal Michael Czerny has been designated to lead the Sunday Mass for Lent, which is also part of the preparations for the Jubilee 2025. The Vatican noted that the event carries extra significance as people around the world direct their prayers and well-wishes toward the pope’s recovery.
Pilgrims have gathered nightly in St Peter’s Square, offering prayers for Pope Francis. The news of his illness, which initially started as bronchitis before progressing into pneumonia, has sparked worldwide concern. The Vatican revealed that he had suffered serious respiratory episodes, including a prolonged asthmatic crisis and bronchospasm.
Despite speculation regarding his health and potential resignation, Pope Francis has continued to lead the Catholic Church with determination. His message of gratitude serves as a testament to his unwavering faith and connection with believers across the globe. As prayers continue, the world awaits further updates on his condition and hopeful recovery.
