Osogbo-Gbongan Truck Accident Claims Two Lives, 15 Injured

Two people lost their lives on Wednesday in a single-vehicle truck accident at the Iwo Road junction along the Osogbo-Gbongan highway in Osun State.

The crash, which also left fifteen others injured, occurred in the early hours of the day. It involved a DAF truck reportedly travelling from Kebbi State to Ikire, Osun State.

According to the Osun Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the truck was carrying a large number of animals—cows, goats, and sheep—as well as human passengers. Some passengers were reportedly seated on top of the animals.

Security Commander Leye Adegboyega, who spoke on the incident, said initial investigations pointed to mechanical failure and driver fatigue. He noted that the driver had dozed off while on the move, a situation that had reportedly happened more than once after the truck passed Osogbo.

Trouble struck near the Surprise Hotel area in Gbongan. The truck veered off the road, plunged into a ditch, and overturned. Passengers and animals were flung out of the vehicle, causing chaos at the scene.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after. Two of the passengers were confirmed dead on the spot, while fifteen others sustained various degrees of injuries. The injured victims were rushed to two medical centres in Gbongan—Adeoye and Ariremako—where they received treatment. The bodies of the deceased were also taken to these facilities.

The Nigeria Police Division in Gbongan has since taken custody of the vehicle for further action.

Reacting to the incident, Commander Adegboyega issued a strong warning to commercial drivers. He urged motorists to keep unfit vehicles off the road and to prioritise rest while driving.

“This crash is a reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility,” he said. “We must stay alert behind the wheel and ensure our vehicles are in good condition before embarking on any journey.”
