Anglican Church of Nigeria Elects 15 New Bishops

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has announced the election of 15 new bishops to serve across the country. The appointments cover one vacant diocese and 14 newly created dioceses.

The decision was taken at the Episcopal Synod of the House of Bishops, held on Thursday at the Cathedral Church of Emmanuel, Okesha, Ado-Ekiti. The meeting was presided over by the Primate of the Church, The Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba.

According to a statement signed by the Church’s Communication Officer, Korede Akintunde, the development reflects the church’s expansion plan and mission strategy. Archbishop Ndukuba explained that the elections are part of efforts to strengthen Anglican presence and ministry in Nigeria.

However, the election of a bishop for the Missionary Diocese of Eket was suspended. The delay followed the sudden death of the Bishop of Uyo Diocese earlier in the week. The new diocese will be created out of Uyo.

The Primate called on members of the church to pray for the bishops-elect and their families, stressing the need for divine guidance as they begin their assignments. He noted that the consecration of the new bishops will take place on November 9, 2025, in Abuja. Dates for the inauguration of the new dioceses and the enthronements will be released later.

The Synod’s decision comes shortly after the Standing Committee Meeting of the Church in Ekiti State, where the creation of 15 new dioceses was approved. This expansion brings the total number of dioceses under the Anglican Communion in Nigeria to 176.

The approval followed extensive inspections and validation exercises after the moratorium on the creation of new dioceses was lifted in September 2024.

The newly elected bishops will oversee both fully-fledged and missionary dioceses across the country, marking a significant milestone in the church’s growth.
