Northern Christian Groups Not in Rivalry With CAN-Leaders

The Northern Christians Religious Assembly has dismissed claims that it is competing with the Christian Association of Nigeria. The group reaffirmed that CAN remains the umbrella body for Christian groups and denominations nationwide.

National President of NOCRELA, Archbishop John Praise Daniel, made the clarification on Monday in Minna, Niger State. He made the remarks at the inauguration and investiture ceremony of the assembly’s Niger State chapter.

Daniel said the emergence of Christian groups should strengthen the voice of the church rather than create division. He urged such organisations to support CAN and amplify its efforts on issues affecting Christians.

Represented by NOCRELA’s National Public Secretary, Rev. Bulus Yayaha, the archbishop said the assembly was formed to defend the Christian faith and work with CAN.

He explained that NOCRELA was established to complement CAN’s role as the umbrella body for Christians, rather than compete with or rival the association.

Daniel noted that Christians have CAN as their major umbrella organization, while other faiths have several recognised bodies representing their interests.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of CAN in Niger State, Most Rev. Bulus Yohanna, said Christians need credible voices to address issues affecting them.

Yohanna, represented by his deputy, Rev. Joshua Marcus, expressed support for the emergence of various Christian groups. He, however, stressed the need for unity among the various organisations.

“This is the time we need people, both individuals and groups, to speak for us. We must unite and speak with one voice,” he said.

The CAN chairman further encouraged Christians to stand behind their leaders when they speak on matters concerning the church and wider society.

He said the Christian community must show greater commitment and solidarity, given the number of influential leaders within the church.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Inauguration Committee, Evangelist Charles Amatu, said the establishment of the Niger State chapter had been delayed beyond schedule.

Amatu noted that several northern states had already constituted their NOCRELA executives before Niger State followed suit. Meanwhile, the state chairman of NOCRELA, Rev. Samuel Shaba, inaugurated the organisation’s women wing during the event.

The new women’s wing, led by Hon. Deborah Salawu, received a charge to work closely with the state executive and support the assembly’s activities.
