CAN distances self from endorsements, seeks credible poll
According The PUNCH, Kwara State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has reiterated its position of political neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections, distancing itself from reports suggesting that it has endorsed political parties or candidates in the state.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Bishop Sunday Adewole, the association clarified that it is not involved in any form of political endorsement or partisan alignment. It said the reports circulating in some quarters do not reflect its official position.
CAN stressed that while individuals, churches, and Christian groups have the constitutional right to participate in political activities, such involvement must remain strictly personal and should not be presented as the position of the association.
The body noted that only decisions and statements issued through its recognised leadership can be regarded as its official stance, warning against misrepresentation of private opinions as institutional endorsement.
It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, unity, justice, and credible elections across Kwara State and Nigeria, especially as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to the association, its primary responsibility remains to encourage responsible civic participation among Christians and the general public, while also providing moral and spiritual guidance rooted in peace and truth.

CAN Kwara State maintained that it remains firmly non-partisan and apolitical in all electoral matters, adding that it neither supports nor campaigns for any political party or candidate.
The statement further explained that the association will continue to focus on prayers for peaceful elections and encourage issue-based political engagement that strengthens democracy and national stability.
It also cautioned individuals and groups within the Christian community against presenting personal political views as the official position of CAN, noting that such actions can cause misunderstanding among the public.
The clarification comes amid increasing political consultations and alignments across Kwara State and other parts of the country as political actors intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Bishop Sunday Adewole, in the statement, reaffirmed that CAN will continue to promote peace, moral values, and harmonious coexistence among residents, regardless of political or religious differences.
