Outrage as Israeli Soldier Smashes Jesus Statue in Lebanon
A photo showing an Israeli soldier striking a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon has sparked strong reactions online and across political circles.
The image spread quickly on social media and drew criticism from religious leaders, officials, and commentators. In response, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was shocked and deeply saddened by the incident. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also issued an apology, saying the act hurt the feelings of many Christians.
The statue stood on a crucifix outside a family home in Debel, a southern Lebanese village where some residents have remained despite ongoing conflict. According to local accounts, the act took place near a private residence, making the damage feel even more personal to the community.
Father Fadi Flaifel, a leader in the local church, strongly condemned the act. He said the destruction of the cross goes against basic human values and respect for religion. He also claimed that similar incidents had happened in the past, raising concerns among residents.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military confirmed that the image was real. It portrayed the soldier’s behavior as grave and inconsistent with the principles upheld by the military. The army said it would take appropriate action and is working with the local Christian community to restore the damaged statue.
The incident comes at a sensitive time. A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah recently paused weeks of fighting in southern Lebanon. Although the truce has reduced violence, both sides have accused each other of breaking the agreement.
As reactions continued, the United States Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, called for firm and visible consequences. Several American political figures also criticized the act, describing it as disturbing and unacceptable.
At the same time, recent surveys suggest that public support for Israel in the United States has declined. A study by the Pew Research Center found that more Americans now hold negative views of the country compared to last year.
This is not the first controversy involving Christian sites. Just last month, there was global concern after Israeli police restricted access to a major church in Jerusalem during a religious event. Authorities said the move was for safety reasons.
Despite the backlash, some Israeli officials maintain that the country supports religious freedom. They argue that Israel remains a place where Christian communities continue to grow and practice their faith openly.
Still, the latest incident has renewed debate about respect for religious symbols during conflict. For many, it highlights the need for accountability and greater sensitivity in areas already marked by tension.
