Taraba Churches Join Health Officials for Mass Vaccination

Churches across Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, opened their doors on Sunday to health officials conducting a mass vaccination exercise against measles, rubella, polio, and the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

The campaign targets children between nine months and fourteen years for the measles and rubella vaccines, infants under five for polio, and girls aged nine for the HPV vaccine.

Clergymen in Jalingo praised the initiative, describing it as a strategic and lifesaving step. They said bringing the campaign into worship centres would help reach more families and protect children from preventable diseases.

“This is a commendable move. It will save our children from avoidable illnesses,” a church leader said, adding that the partnership reflects the church’s commitment to community health.

Some clerics also addressed public concerns about the HPV vaccine, urging parents to dismiss misinformation. They emphasized that the vaccine plays a crucial role in preventing cervical cancer in women.

Health workers expressed satisfaction with the turnout, noting that the exercise had recorded smooth progress since it began. They said the cooperation from churches had helped boost participation among families who might have otherwise been hesitant.

The vaccination campaign will run for ten days and cover all sixteen local government areas in Taraba State, including the two Special Development Areas.

Officials say the partnership between faith-based institutions and the state health ministry marks a significant step toward safeguarding the health of children and young girls in the state.
