A 13-Year-Old’s Suicide Ignites Outrage in Nigeria

A tragic case has unfolded in Nigeria, sparking outrage rumours across the nation. A 13-year-old boy, Wisdom Hashimu, was found dead by hanging on Friday, June 6, 2024. The suspected cause? He committed suicide, driven by the immense psychological distress he suffered after being falsely accused of theft and brutally tortured by a soldier.

According to The Guardian newspaper, the ordeal began with a missing sum of #10,000. Hope, a 16-year-old neighbour of Wisdom, reported the theft. Her boyfriend, Segun Samson, a soldier stationed at Bodi Camp in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, allegedly took matters into his own hands. Wisdom was accused of stealing the money from Hope.

Reports indicate that Wisdom faced horrific torture at the hands of the soldier. This, coupled with the weight of the false accusation, pushed the young boy to take his own life.

Adding another layer of tragedy, it was later revealed that Hope’s brother was the true culprit behind the missing money.

News of Wisdom’s death has ignited fury among Nigerians. Many condemn the soldier’s actions as a gross overreach of authority, particularly considering his relationship with a minor. Calls for his immediate arrest on charges of murder, torture, and potential molestation have erupted.

Furthermore, the 16-year-old girl and her brother haven’t escaped scrutiny either. Nigerians believe they should face legal consequences for their roles in the incident.
