Why I Stopped Mimicking Bishop Oyedepo – Son of the Prophet Speaks Out
Popular Nigerian skit maker, White Olasunkanmi Barry, widely known as Son of the Prophet, has explained why he stopped mimicking Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of the Living Faith Church.
Barry shared his reasons during a recent interview on the Teju Babyface Show. He revealed that intense criticism and emotionally draining feedback from viewers pushed him to reconsider the act.
According to him, many people accused him of attracting curses to himself. Others questioned whether Bishop Oyedepo had ever approved the impersonations. These messages, he said, left him emotionally affected and led to serious personal reflection.
“I would receive some messages and just feel low,” Barry admitted. “People kept asking, ‘Why not find your own voice?’ But I wondered, what if my voice was in mimicking?”
Despite the backlash, Barry stressed that he has nothing but respect for Bishop Oyedepo. He described his former mimicry as an attempt to walk in the steps of a man he deeply admires. However, he noted that he chose to stop, not out of rebellion or offense, but after much thought and a growing sense of discomfort.

He also debunked assumptions that the act brought him huge financial success. Contrary to popular belief, Barry said the earnings from that phase of his career were modest.
“I didn’t make millions like people think. In total, all the ministrations I was invited for didn’t fetch me more than six hundred thousand naira,” he revealed.
He added that some people even confronted his mother, falsely believing that Bishop Oyedepo had gifted him millions. “They told her I must have received over fifty million naira. My mum just shook her head and said nothing,” he recounted.
Barry’s story sheds light on the emotional and financial realities behind the comedy many fans enjoy. It also raises deeper questions about boundaries, respect, and originality in content creation.
