MAJORING ON THE MINOR (IV)

MEMORISE: It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem (2 Samuel 11:1).

READ: 2 Samuel 11:11-15

EXPOSITION

King David, a man after God’s heart, took a dangerous turning point when he was supposed to be at the battlefront but stayed back in Jerusalem (2 Sam. 11:1). It was then he saw a beautiful woman bathing, took and laid with her (vv. 2-3). Achan also followed this dangerous path (Jos. 7:21).

David attempted to cover up his sinful acts by inviting Uriah for dinner and getting him drunk. When Uriah wouldn’t return home, David sent him with a letter to Joab, asking him to put Uriah at the front of the battle, where it was fiercest, and then withdrew, so Uriah would be killed (2 Sam 11:13-15).

This is a clear example of how one sin leads to committing more sins to hide the original one. King David committed adultery, stealing another man’s (Uriah’s) wife. To cover this up, he resorted to murder. However, did he go scot-free (12:9,11,12)?

All these things happened to him because he delegated the work he was supposed to do. According to Pastor S. O. Oladele, in one of his books, King David became a saint in the wrong place. May that not describe you. Beware!
