States on Alert as Adamawa Flood Death Toll Rises

The recent devastating flood in Adamawa State has left at least eight people dead, dozens missing many of them children and over 600 homes destroyed, prompting nationwide emergency measures. Communities such as Shagari Low Cost and Yolde Pate in Yola were submerged after torrential rainfall early Sunday, displacing hundreds of residents.

Rescue teams, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the police, are still searching for missing persons. Eyewitnesses and victims report tragic losses, especially among children, as floodwaters surged into homes during the six-hour downpour.

In response to warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), several states—including Anambra, Edo, Bayelsa, Sokoto, Ogun, Gombe, and Imo—are ramping up preparedness. Actions range from clearing drainage systems, relocating residents in flood-prone areas, and activating emergency response committees.

  • Anambra: has constituted a multi-agency committee and intensified awareness campaigns in vulnerable LGAs like Ogbaru and Anambra East.
  • Edo: is desilting drainages and inspecting erosion-prone areas, with temporary shelters ready in affected communities.
  • Bayelsa: a highly flood-prone state, has cleared water channels and prepared public schools to serve as IDP camps.
  • Sokoto: is conducting impact assessments in severely hit areas like Yabo, Shagari, and Tureta, where dozens of homes and farmlands have been destroyed.
  • Imo: formed technical committees for evacuation, logistics, and public awareness, while NEMA is training divers for flood rescues.
  • Ogun: launched state-wide sensitisation tours, urging residents to stop dumping waste in waterways and prepare for flash floods.

State emergency agencies nationwide are on high alert, with warnings that the 2025 rainy season could bring even more severe flooding. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to stay vigilant and relocate where necessary, as government officials stress the importance of environmental responsibility in flood prevention.
