Seyi Shay Reveals Why She Stopped Going To Church

Nigerian singer and songwriter Seyi Shay has stirred online debate after revealing why she stopped attending her former church.

In a recent Instagram story, the music star said she left because of a disagreement with a church leader. The issue? A suggestion to stop singing contemporary gospel songs and instead focus only on hymns and scripture-based music.

Seyi Shay didn’t support the idea. She questioned the continued use of hymns with historical links to slavery. According to her, many of these songs were written by people who owned slaves.

“I left that church, period,” she wrote. “I don’t understand how people can feel blessed singing songs written by slave owners; songs passed down while our ancestors were being tortured.”

She also encouraged Christians to be more mindful of the music they sing in worship. In her words, “Ignorance is not godly.” She urged believers to do their research and understand the history behind their worship songs.

Her statement quickly went viral. While some people praised her for speaking up, others disagreed. Many defended the spiritual power of old hymns, saying the origin of a song doesn’t take away from its message.

This isn’t the first time Seyi Shay has spoken about faith. Known for blending Afrobeat with spiritual messages, she often shares her thoughts on religion and personal growth.

Now, her comments have added fuel to an ongoing discussion—should churches rethink the music they use, especially when it has ties to painful parts of history?
