Pakistan Moves to Reform Christian Marriage Law in Punjab

A bold bill in Pakistan Punjab is challenging old Christian marriage rules. Lawmaker Falbous Christopher wants to update the 1872 law and raise the marriage age to 18 for both men and women. The reform aims to stop child marriage, improve legal protection, and strengthen family dignity. For Christians worldwide, it offers hope and a clearer call to justice.

The old law still shapes Christian weddings in Pakistan. Girls could marry at 13, and boys at 16. It also restricted wedding times and who could officiate. However, many Christians and legal observers say those rules no longer fit today’s needs. As Pakistan reviews minority family laws, this bill adds fresh momentum to the push for fairness.

Falbous Christopher’s Christian Marriage Act Bill 2026 would make several important changes. It says both partners must be Christian. It also raises the legal marriage age to 18. In addition, it requires marriages to be registered with local councils and the national identity system. That would give marriages stronger legal standing and help protect family rights.

The bill also opens the door for pastors from approved churches to lead weddings. It removes old time limits on ceremonies and defines marriage as between one man and one woman. These changes would make the law clearer and more practical for churches and families. They also reflect a more modern legal approach.

Punjab lawmaker Ejaz Alam Augustine has said the old law no longer serves today’s Christian community. He argued that reform is needed to protect people and ensure justice. Katherine Sapna of Christians True Spirit also welcomed the move. She said it could help address long standing marriage and divorce problems among Christians.

For Christian families, the impact could be significant. Raising the marriage age may help protect young girls from early marriage. Registration can also improve inheritance claims and other legal rights. Women may gain better protection in custody or separation cases. Churches could also play a stronger role in wedding life and family care.

For believers, the issue goes beyond law. It touches faith, dignity, and justice. Scripture calls Christians to protect the vulnerable and act fairly. This reform reflects those values in public life. It shows how legal change can support a stronger and more honorable family structure.
Pakistan’s Christian marriage law reform is still being debated, but it already matters. It speaks to Christian families, church leaders, and believers who care about justice. It also reminds the global church that faith can shape laws that protect the weak and honor marriage.
