NOA Commends Oyo Government’s Flood Prevention Measures

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Oyo State Directorate, has praised the state government for its proactive steps in addressing flood risks ahead of the rainy season.

Speaking on a Yoruba public affairs radio programme, Meto Mofin, on Success 105.3 FM, the State Director of NOA, Akanbi Aderogba, applauded the government’s alignment with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMET) flood predictions. He highlighted the dredging of rivers and streams across all 33 local government areas as a strategic move to mitigate flooding.

Aderogba warned residents against poor environmental practices, particularly the dumping of refuse into waterways during rainfall. He stressed that such acts significantly increase the chances of urban flooding.

According to him, erosion caused by flooding is gradually being tackled through targeted channel projects initiated by the Oyo State Governor. These efforts, he noted, are yielding visible results in flood-prone communities. He urged citizens to support these measures by keeping their surroundings clean and adhering to safety practices.

On the issue of jungle justice, Aderogba emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law. He said Nigeria has moved beyond a state where people take laws into their own hands. The NOA Director cautioned against the spread of misinformation, which can incite mob violence, and called for respect for legal procedures.

He also expressed satisfaction with the changing attitudes among residents, which he attributed to the agency’s ongoing sensitization campaigns. Aderogba noted that the impact of these efforts is being felt more in the quality of public behavior than in mere statistics. He pointed to a decline in tanker-related accidents as evidence of growing public awareness.

Touching on economic issues, he acknowledged the early benefits of fuel subsidy removal, including a drop in the prices of some staple foods. He encouraged citizens to remain hopeful and patient as government reforms continue to take shape.

In a final note, the NOA Director urged the public to participate in the ongoing Democracy Cash Quiz. The nationwide competition, hosted on the agency’s website, aims to engage citizens in celebrating Democracy Day. He invited listeners to visit www.noa.govt.ng and click on the “Democracy Dash” link to join the quiz and stand a chance to win.

Aderogba’s remarks reflect a blend of civic responsibility, environmental awareness, and national pride – key elements in building a more informed and resilient society.
