NiMet Warns of Haze, Thunderstorms in Nigeria Over 3 Days
ABUJA — The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of hazy conditions and thunderstorms across the country from Tuesday to Thursday, advising the public to brace for varying weather patterns and potential hazards.
According to its outlook released on Monday in Abuja, NiMet said parts of Katsina and Kano would experience slight dust haze on Tuesday, while thunderstorms are expected over Taraba and Adamawa in the afternoon and evening.
The North Central region will see sunny skies with clouds early in the day, with possible thunderstorms later in the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, and Kwara. Southern states including Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa may also experience isolated morning thunderstorms, followed by wider thunderstorm activity in Edo, Osun, Ekiti, Lagos, Delta, and others by evening.

On Wednesday, hazy and partly sunny conditions are expected in the north, with more thunderstorms anticipated in Taraba, Adamawa, and several North Central states. The southern region is forecast to experience continued thunderstorms, particularly in Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and surrounding states throughout the day.
Thursday’s forecast mirrors earlier patterns with consistent thunderstorms across the South and parts of the North Central region. Delta and Bayelsa may experience morning storms, while states such as Enugu, Imo, Edo, Lagos, and Ogun could be affected later in the day.
NiMet cautioned the public to take preventive measures, particularly as dust particles may impact those with respiratory conditions, and strong winds may accompany thunderstorms.
The agency advised securing loose objects, avoiding driving during heavy rainfall, disconnecting electrical appliances, and staying away from tall trees during storms.
Airline operators have been urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe and efficient flight operations.
