‘Nigerians Must Go’: Ghanaians Protest Over Alleged Prostitution, Ritual Killings

Tension is rising in Ghana as residents stage protests demanding the expulsion of Nigerians accused of fueling crime in their communities.

A viral video circulating on Tuesday shows a crowd of demonstrators marching with placards. Their messages were direct: “Armed robbery and violent attacks must stop,” “Our health is at stake due to mass prostitution,” and “Nigerians are kidnapping and using people for rituals.” Some protesters alleged that missing children cases were linked to Nigerians, specifically mentioning Igbos.

The demonstrators also displayed a photo of a man reportedly killed by a Nigerian in Accra. One protester, a visibly angry woman in her mid-30s, shouted repeatedly, “Nigerians must go. You can’t live in someone’s country and behave anyhow.”

This protest has sparked memories of the 1983 “Ghana Must Go” saga, when Nigeria’s then President Shehu Shagari ordered over two million undocumented immigrants, mostly Ghanaians, to leave Nigeria immediately. At the time, Shagari insisted that illegal immigrants “must face the law” without delay. The mass exodus birthed the now-famous checked bags, symbolizing forced migration and intolerance.

As of press time, the Ghanaian government has not issued an official response to the protests or clarified whether it plans to deport Nigerians living in the country.
