Missionary Father, Daughter Die in Florida Aid Flight Crash

A U.S.-based missionary and his daughter were killed on Monday when their small aircraft crashed shortly after taking off in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The victims, 53-year-old Alexander Wurm and his 22-year-old daughter, Serena, were heading to Jamaica with emergency relief supplies for communities still rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa.

The plane went down in a pond within a residential area of Coral Springs only minutes after takeoff. Both father and daughter were the sole occupants of the aircraft and died at the scene.

Ignite the Fire, the mission organization Wurm founded, announced the loss in an emotional statement celebrating the pair’s dedication to humanitarian work. The group described their final mission as a testament to “selfless service and courageous love,” and remembered Serena as someone whose compassion deeply touched those around her.

Authorities confirmed that the aircraft involved was a Beechcraft King Air recently acquired for mission work. Wurm, an experienced pilot since 2005, had expressed enthusiasm online about using the plane to move aid throughout the Caribbean, noting that it had arrived “just in time” to help transport relief items to Montego Bay.

Jamaica continues to face significant hardship following Hurricane Melissa, which caused extensive destruction and left at least 45 people dead when it made landfall on October 29.

Sean Malone, founder of Crisis Response International a relief group Wurm had assisted  said Wurm was known for acting quickly in times of crisis.
“Alex cared deeply for the people of the Caribbean,” Malone said. “When disaster struck, he didn’t wait. He mobilized, brought in resources, and genuinely changed lives. His commitment saved others  and he ultimately gave his own while serving.”
