Microsoft Expands AI Skills Training in Nigeria
Microsoft has announced a major expansion of its digital and artificial intelligence skills program in Nigeria. The company says hundreds of thousands of Nigerians are already building new technology skills through its training platforms.
The update was shared at a media engagement in Lagos. Microsoft said the growing participation shows Nigeria’s increasing readiness to compete in the global digital economy.
About 350000 Nigerians have taken part in student focused learning program so far. From this number, 63000 completed structured training paths, while 43000 earned globally recognized certifications.
The company also plans to train an additional 350000 Nigerians in artificial intelligence skills. This move forms part of a wider national skills effort being delivered in partnership with government institutions and local education and technology groups.
Microsoft said the broader goal is to equip up to five million Nigerians with relevant digital skills. Developers are being trained through targeted program to build strong technical capacity. Public sector workers are also gaining new knowledge through government backed digital initiatives.
So far, hundreds of participants have received training in data analytics and artificial intelligence integration. Many others have acquired advanced skills in machine learning, data science and modern software practices. These efforts are aimed at preparing the workforce for jobs of the future.
Nigeria’s artificial intelligence adoption rate currently stands at 8.7 percent. This is slightly below the average across Sub Saharan Africa. Microsoft noted that the country must move faster to avoid falling behind as artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries.

Projections show that artificial intelligence could add up to 1.5 trillion dollars to Africa’s economy by 2030. With one of the youngest populations in the world, Nigeria is well positioned to benefit if skills development is prioritised early.
Microsoft said its focus remains on three key areas. These include innovation, digital infrastructure such as connectivity and power, and skills development. The company is working with public institutions to equip leaders, developers and everyday technology users to adopt artificial intelligence effectively.
The partnership with local business and academic institutions has also delivered leadership focused training. Nearly 100 public sector leaders from dozens of government agencies have completed program designed to improve decision making, governance and responsible technology use.
The training goes beyond technical knowledge. Participants are guided on issues such as ethics, risk management and safe deployment of artificial intelligence. There is also a strong focus on using technology to improve access to finance and strengthen agriculture.
Microsoft noted that many Nigerian graduates still lack practical digital skills. Closing this gap is seen as critical to improving workforce readiness and national competitiveness.
Efforts are also being made to reach communities at the grassroots level. Dozens of training partners across the country have been supported with infrastructure to reduce barriers to learning and expand access to artificial intelligence education.
The company said true digital transformation happens when government, educators, developers and communities move forward together. Microsoft reaffirmed its commitment to making artificial intelligence accessible, inclusive and responsible, while helping Nigerians prepare for a digital future.
