FG Vows Stronger Ties With Catholic Church for Peace, Progress

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the Catholic Church in promoting national development, peace, and social cohesion. The government described the Church as a vital partner in advancing the nation’s moral and social values.

Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), delivered the message during the First Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Abuja on Sunday. The gathering brought together Church leaders to discuss pastoral priorities and national concerns.

Akume called the plenary “a significant moment of reflection and pastoral guidance” for both the Church and the nation. He praised the Catholic Church for its enduring influence on Nigeria’s moral landscape and its contribution to public discourse.

He highlighted that pastoral letters and communiqués from Catholic bishops often reflect the conscience of the nation. According to Akume, these messages guide public office holders to uphold transparency, accountability, and servant leadership.

The SGF emphasized that the Church’s interventions are rooted in Gospel values rather than political opposition. He said this moral guidance has played a key role in shaping policies and encouraging ethical leadership across Nigeria.

Akume also commended the bishops for their leadership and resilience in promoting social justice and evangelization. He expressed optimism that the plenary discussions would inspire practical resolutions for the Church’s pastoral and developmental mission.

In conclusion, the SGF reaffirmed the government’s readiness to strengthen collaboration with the Catholic Church. He called on all stakeholders to work together in fostering peace, national stability, and inclusive development across Nigeria
