Experts Urge Nigerian Women to Prioritize Regular Health Checks

Health professionals are calling on Nigerian women to take greater control of their well-being by embracing regular medical checks. They say early detection remains one of the strongest defenses against life-threatening complications.

At the SYNLAB Nigeria Women’s Health Webinar, Consultant Gynecologist Dr. Waliyat Jolayemi and Lifestyle Physician Dr. Eniola Afolabi-Obe warned that too many women ignore symptoms or lack access to proper diagnostic services. This, they stressed, often allows serious conditions to go unnoticed.

Dr. Jolayemi explained that illnesses such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, diabetes, and hormonal imbalances may develop silently. Symptoms like irregular menstrual cycles, weight changes, mood swings, and fertility struggles are frequently dismissed as “normal,” she said.

“Diagnostic tests are vital for early detection and management. Many illnesses go undetected because symptoms appear late,” she noted.

Dr. Afolabi-Obe, speaking on midlife health, highlighted the risks tied to perimenopause and menopause, which can begin as early as the mid-30s. Hormonal shifts, she said, affect sleep, mood, energy, and cognition, while also raising the risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers.

She noted that more than one billion women worldwide are in their menopausal or postmenopausal stage, yet many remain unprepared. Preventive screenings such as bone density tests, cholesterol checks, mammograms, pap smears, and hormone panels, she advised, should not be neglected.

Both experts emphasized that lifestyle habits play a critical role alongside medical testing. Balanced nutrition, regular exercise, stress control, and quality rest are essential for long-term wellness. They urged Nigerian women to reject the culture of normalizing abnormal health patterns and instead seek timely medical advice.

The webinar was hosted by SYNLAB Nigeria, a leading medical diagnostics provider with more than 30 active locations across the country. Part of the global SYNLAB Group operating in 33 countries, the organization has been ISO 15189 certified since 2006 and continues to champion preventive healthcare in Nigeria.
