Covenant University Launches New College of Law

Covenant University has announced the launch of its College of Law in a move aimed at strengthening legal education in Nigeria. The new college is expected to address gaps in professional training and help restore confidence in the nation’s legal system.The announcement was made by the Chancellor, Dr David Oyedepo, during the groundbreaking ceremony held on February 12, 2026. The date is significant. It marks the anniversary of the university’s approval in 2002. For the institution, the moment reflects both growth and purpose.
Dr Oyedepo said the College of Law will focus on raising lawyers who are skilled, ethical, and committed to service. He stressed that Nigeria needs legal practitioners who combine knowledge with strong character. According to him, the new college will play a key role in improving professional standards and strengthening the justice system.

He also reflected on the university’s journey over the past two decades. When Covenant University was first licensed, critics doubted its potential. Today, it stands as one of Nigeria’s leading private universities, with strong academic performance and high graduate employability.

Recent rankings have placed the university among the top institutions in the country, including recognition in global sustainability assessments. These achievements, the Chancellor noted, show that clear vision and consistency bring lasting results.
Construction of the College of Law will begin immediately. Plans are also in place for a College of Medicine, with its groundbreaking scheduled later in the month. The expansion highlights the university’s commitment to meeting national needs through quality education.
University leaders expressed confidence that the College of Law will mark a new chapter in legal education. As work begins, expectations are high that the institution will continue to raise standards and shape the future of Nigeria’s legal profession.
